28 weeks later sniper2/21/2023 With bullets filling the air, Kyle began to drag him toward safety. The man was screaming in pain from gunshots to one arm and both legs, and worse, a devastating gut shot that somehow had slid below his body armor. Kyle scurried in front of the enemy's hideout and grabbed one of the injured Marines. Kyle and the other SEAL darted out into the street to the injured men, sprinting 20 yards into a torrent of gunfire. "It's beaten into your head throughout your training: 'You're the better, more effective warrior.'" That meant he had to get those Marines, no matter what. As a Navy SEAL amongst a group of "young, 18-year-old kids" barely out of basic training, Kyle felt he had a special obligation. "When you see an injured man, you do whatever you can to save him," he told me. Kyle couldn't bear to see the Marines struggling helplessly in the street. By this time, the Marines had barricaded themselves in a building across the street from the insurgents' house.īut two Marines had been shot and lay in the road, writhing in pain. Kyle and another SEAL sniper realized they were no longer effective from the rooftop, so they flew down the stairs to support the Marines. The Marines were left exposed in the street. The enemy fell back and barricaded themselves into a house. The Marines encountered a group of enemy fighters, and "heavy contact" erupted. It was during an overwatch mission, in which Kyle was providing rooftop cover for Marines clearing buildings below. The first episode occurred in early November 2004. I feel compelled to tell these stories because they reveal Kyle's dedication to saving lives, not just taking them. Two incidents during the Second Battle of Fallujah in November 2004 illustrate this selflessness, this willingness to put himself in grave danger for his comrades. Kyle's response was telling: "The Americans, the local Iraqis, anyone who I witnessed violence coming down on them and I could not save them." That flies directly in the face of the bogus "racist" claim. In fact, later in his 2012 interview with O'Reilly, the host asked whether he had any regrets, and Kyle said, "Yes - it's the people I couldn't save." O'Reilly pushed him, saying: "The Americans you couldn't save? The allied forces?" No, the Kyle I knew was motivated by something far more noble - defending innocent civilians and his American brethren. It was all about the terrorists who were beheading and torturing civilians (Iraqis and westerners alike). Heck, I freely admit that I hate terrorists, too.īut Kyle never expressed to me any comparable views about Iraqi civilians. That's not a problem at all."įorgive me, but that doesn't seem terribly damning in my view. When Kyle appeared on Bill O'Reilly's show in 2012, he said: "I'm killing to protect my fellow Americans." When O'Reilly insisted that Kyle liked it, he responded, "It's not a problem taking out people that want your people dead. "They were complete dumbasses," he said to me. He called them "savages" and spoke of them with unmistakable disdain. In our interviews, Kyle certainly conveyed that he hated the insurgents, the Islamic fundamentalist militants against whom they were fighting, and that he was proud of killing many of them. But not "a racist who took pleasure in dehumanizing and killing brown people," as one writer suggested in a British periodical. So, when I heard some negative backlash about Kyle - calling him "a hate-filled killer," "coward," or "mass-murdering sniper" - I had to share my experience.įirst, Kyle was a hate-filled killer. Protecting American lives, he told me, was his driving force. On several well-documented occasions, he deliberately put his life in grave danger to save other Americans. His dedication to his fellow American troops was intense and overpowering.

Malo is currently composed of longtime members handpicked by Arcelio Garcia who have been performing with him for decades to carry on the Malo legacy. Malo has been led since its inception by lead vocalist, Arcelio Garcia, until his passing in 2020. Martin Cantu and L-Rey released a gospel rendition of Malo's "Suavecito" as a hymn titled "Jesucristo". Since leaving Malo in 1998, Martin Cantu, now an ordained minister who pastors a Christian-based church in the San Francisco Bay Area called Praise Worship Center, still tours intensely as a music evangelist as well with his Latin/pop gospel band L-Rey (pronounced “El Rey”). Martin Cantu also has several songs featured on the 1998 album, Rocks The Rockies, a live Malo concert recording, recorded in Pueblo, Colorado. Martin went on to write the first single, "Take My Breath Away", along with co-writer Damon Bartlett and two other songs, "More Than Friends" and "Malo Ya llego", co-written with Arcelio Garcia. The title track of the CD was co-written by Damon Bartlett and Martin Cantu, who, like previous band members, also grew up in the San Francisco Mission District. In 1995, Malo released Señorita on GNP Crescendo Records. We were sort of imitating it, and then we said, 'Let's just leave it, we're gonna change it later.' It really makes the song – we think – so we just left it."įrom 1994 to 1998, Malo was joined by new lead singer Martin Cantu. Any car show or swap meet you'd ever go by, you'd always hear that and that just stuck in your mind." He added, "We actually came up with that part, and it was very similar to Malo's part. Mark McGrath, Sugar Ray's front man, says, "We referenced 'Suavecito' because growing up in California, you know, that was just like the low rider anthem. The chorus of the song references "Suavecito". lyrics were written and sung by guest musician, Richard Bean.Ī vocal section of "Suavecito" was included in the refrain of Sugar Ray's 1999 hit song, " Every Morning", which was one of Sugar Ray's most successful singles, climbing to number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart, becoming the latter country's second-highest-selling single of 1999. Malo's January 1972 hit single, " Suavecito" (meaning "soft" or "smooth" in Spanish), was the group's only song that charted on Billboard's Top 20, at #18 for 10 weeks. Arcelio Garcia remained the leader of Malo until his passing in 2020 Buchtel went on to play with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Jaco Pastorius and Woody Herman Harrell became one of the most lyrical trumpet soloists, working often with saxophonist Phil Woods Abel Zarate went on to play with Willie Bobo and continues to play Latin/Brazilian Global jazz in San Francisco with his group Zarate Pollace Project. Īfter the release of their first album, many of Malo's original band members left the group in a rift widely publicized in the media. Malo's music was popular in Central and South America, especially the songs "Chevere", "Nena", "Pana", "Cafe", and "Oye Mama". Some of the best musicians in the Bay Area were featured in Malo, including Luis Gasca, Forrest Buchtel, Jr., Ron Smith, and Tom Poole in the trumpet section. The band featured full horn and percussion sections in the style of contemporary bands Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago. (Zarate also played in a band called the Righteous Ones together.) The other three members (Abel Zarate, Roy Murray, and Richard Spremich) had played together in the group Naked Lunch. Three of Malo's original members (Garcia, Pablo Tellez, and Santana) had previously played in the band The Malibus. The San Francisco-based ensemble was led by Richard Bean, Arcelio Garcia, and Jorge Santana, the brother of Latin-rock guitarist Carlos Santana. I’ve said the new hub must bring some significant features of which we are not aware, but several here have said to not count on that being the case. Still, in order to remain at the table there must be something to present, and I’m assuming that for the immediate future that will be Hub 2 and whatever enhanced business model ST reveals. I would guess the relationship is somewhat different with ST, and I understand earlier comments about buying a piece of the IoT conversation. Multiple sources mentioned internal politics as one of the main reasons PX ended up on the chopping block. The project was “highly controversial,” said one source, and it faced significant resistance from Samsung’s Korean executives, who were wary of a product developed out of their reach in the U.S. Samsung kept the team in a separate office in New York, shielding them from other divisions within the company and even keeping some of the developers working on Samsung’s smart TVs in the dark about the nature of the project. Joining Samsung means we will be able to work on products that marry the best hardware and software in the TV space, products that will be used by tens of millions of people and will help to shape the future of TV. Remember that final boss, where you had free control of a rocket and you had to avoid the lava? Easily one of the best final boss fights I ever had.As of this reading there are two posted reviews for this new show. Some of the levels were too fun to be legal, it felt like. It didn’t boast the free-roaming that Super Mario 64 did, but it had the prettiest environments of any game released back then, and the cartoony-looking pirates only fit in even more. Looking back on it, the game had very inspired level design. I haven’t seen the 3DS take on it, nor do I wish to, considering how polished it is on my Dreamcast. PS1 had voice acting, Dreamcast had wickedly buttersmooth framerates (seriously, it never dipped below 60) PC sported the highest resolution, DS had shoddy controls, and the N64 was crap in a bucket. From what I remember, each version had its own thing going for it. I owned it on PC when it first came out (got it free with Sim City 3000, thank you scholastic book orders). Seriously though, 2 was my favorite in the series. Why would Betilla lose limbs from Origins to 1? Are they the same person? They are both the creators of Rayman’s world, and have to do with dreaming, but they are both so different in appearance and name that I’m not positive. Rayman meets the Teensies in The Great Escape, so how could they be in Origins (assuming Origins is supposed to take place prior)? Since it’s just a spin-off, I suppose anything goes, but I still have some questions:įor one, the Teensies. I was under the impression that this was still supposed to be the origin story of Rayman (hence the title), but apparently, according to Wikipedia that was scrapped somewhere along the way, and now it’s just considered a spin-off. However, the game has caused many questions to come up and few answers. It’s so great to finally have another true Rayman game. I think it’s cool to bump this, considering Origins came out just a week ago, and it is awesome! The art style is fantastic and so is the music. For example, studies from the US have found fewer healthy choices available within-stores in more deprived neighbourhoods. Some research has suggested that supermarket stocking practices and store displays may vary according to the socioeconomic characteristics of the local area in which a store is located. Other displays such as those at the ends of aisles and in island bins may also trigger an impulsive choice prior to reaching the checkout. While prior studies have investigated snack food displays at checkouts, a key in-store location where retailers attempt to sell items likely to be purchased on impulse, these only represent a single point of exposure within supermarkets. That study audited 257 checkouts with 87% and 80% displaying chocolate and other sweets, respectively. The placement of snack foods at checkouts in 24 Melbourne supermarkets has been reported previously. Within supermarkets, snack foods are often displayed near the entrance and at checkouts and promotions associated with such products are likely to be common. A recent audit of a large Melbourne supermarket found 1070 snack food items and 863 different beverages available, over 70% of which were considered inconsistent with a healthy diet. Therefore, the within-store supermarket environment is an important focal point for public health nutrition research. cinemas, transport termini).Īlthough the supermarket represents only one food shopping location, it is present in most urban geographic areas in Australia and is visited frequently by most of the population. pharmacies, gas stations) and at other common amenities (e.g. For instance, snack food can now be purchased in food stores, non-food stores (e.g. These consumption patterns are likely to be influenced by increased opportunities to purchase snack foods. Results of this study could promote awareness of the prominence of unhealthy food items in chain-brand supermarkets outlets.Ĭonsumption of unhealthy (energy-dense, nutrient poor) snack foods has become common-place in recent decades. ConclusionsĪs a result of the high availability of snack food displays, exposure to snack foods is almost unavoidable in Melbourne supermarkets, regardless of levels of neighbourhood socioeconomic disadvantage. There was no difference in the availability of these snack food displays by neighbourhood disadvantage. Chocolate items were the most common snack food item on display. Snack foods were also present at a number of end-of-aisle displays (at both the front (median 38%) and back (median 33%) of store), and in island bin displays (median number of island displays: 7 median total circumference of island displays: 19.4 metres). Snack food displays were most prominent at checkouts with only five stores not having snack foods at 100% of their checkouts. We measured the availability of crisps, chocolate, confectionery, and soft drinks (diet and regular) at the checkouts, in end-of-aisle displays, and in island bin displays. Supermarkets were sampled from the least and most socioeconomically disadvantaged suburbs within 30 km of the Melbourne CBD. Within-store audits of 35 Melbourne supermarkets. We aimed to examine the availability of snack food displays at checkouts, end-of-aisle displays and island displays in major supermarket chains in the least and most socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhoods of Melbourne. Snack food exposures within these stores may contribute to higher levels of consumption and ultimately to increasing levels of obesity, particularly within socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The Curse of the Black Pearl is pure popcorn movie glory with gorgeous sword fight choreography, cutting edge special effects, deliciously dark mysticism, and an Academy Award-nominated performance by one Johnny Depp. Fortunately, they struck gold with the first of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, a tale of a washed up drunken pirate whose past catches up with him after he is enlisted to help a blacksmith rescue the governor’s daughter from the cursed crew of his fame former ship, The Black Pearl. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl (2003)ĭisney took a chance on turning one of its theme park attractions into summer blockbuster adventure. I will take points away, however, for Sir Paul McCartney’s cameo. I also award points for the reunion of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley and Barbossa earning a heroic exit this time. The plot is easily the zaniest of the franchise, but for my precious coin, it has some of the best action sequences of the series since Dead Man’s Chest. Oh, and Barbossa is there, too, because who should tell Geoffrey Rush not to have a little fun every once in a while? The answer to both men’s problems can be solved by the universal curse-breaking power of the Trident of Poseidon, which astronomer Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario) holds the key to finding. Meanwhile, Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites), the son of Will and Elizabeth, is looking to free his father from the Flying Dutchman’s curse. In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Johnny Depp reprises his most famous role as Captain Jack Sparrow, once again hunted by a crew of vengeful undead pirates, this time led by Captain Salazar. I must admit that I am a bit of an apologist for the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, somewhat because of my sympathy for pirates movies lacking relevance at the cinema lately, but also because I actually had some fun with it compared to some of the others. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) While we get all of those answers, the journey to get there is a long and often confusing one.įor essentially being a part two to Dead Man’s Chest, the reason Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End scores lower for me is because it feels disconnected from its preceding chapter, with a bleaker tone, a forgettable new cast of characters, and a plot that begs the question, "This is still about pirates, right?" I’ll give the movie credit for Will’s intriguing send-off as heir to the Flying Dutchman, even if that felt unfair to Elizabeth. Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)Īfter Dead Man’s Chest pulled a Back to the Future Part II with its cliffhanger ending, fans anticipated this third Pirates of the Caribbean movie would reveal the fate of William Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann’s (Keira Knightley) romance, why Barbossa was back from the dead somehow, and why Johnny Depp’s face was on the poster if Captain Jack Sparrow died in the last movie.
